Harris Family Makes Final Mortgage Payment One Year Early

Terry, a single mother with 5 children, eked out an existence in the projects in the City of Chicago. She lived in a small, dark, dismal and overcrowded apartment. At that point in her life, she did not have a lot of hope.

Late in 1991, Terry received a flyer from Habitat for Humanity Lake County offering the opportunity to partner with them to own her own home. She was joyous when she received approval for a new Habitat home. At the end of 1992, Habitat for Humanity Lake County held the official dedication for Terry's new house and turned over the keys to her. She moved in the day before Thanksgiving in 1992 and life has been much better for her and her family.

Fast forward to August 2011. Terry appeared at the Habitat for Humanity Lake County office in Waukegan with her last mortgage payment over a year early. Terry and her children were the first Habitat partner family in Lake County to pay off her mortgage. “Habitat for Humanity Lake County was with me all the time and you kept helping me and believing in me. We are a family together”.
