Donate to the Habitat ReStore

Anyone can donate!  Individuals, businesses, stores, manufacturers, congregations, rehabbers, owners demolishing buildings, municipalities, agencies...anybody. You receive a tax deduction and reduce waste.  Most importantly, every donation helps our Partner Families achieve their dream of affordable homeownership. 

Share your ReStore donation information at 847-249-3160 or via e-mail at donations@habitatlc.org.  Please include information about the item you wish to donate such as its condition, age and location.  After we receive your information, we'll contact you.

Donation Criteria
Appliances

All appliances must be clean and in 100% working condition and include all knobs, trays, burners, shelves, etc.

Dishwashers - Due to 2014 U.S EPA guidelines, all dishwashers must be newer than 2011)

Microwaves 7 years old or newer and working properly

Refrigerators, stoves, Cook-Tops, Washers & Dryers 10 years old or newer

Water Heaters 3 years old or newer

Windows

All vinyl windows must be 10 years old or newer

Only new wood windows accepted

No cracks or missing panes

All windows must include appropriate hardware, if applicable

Window sashes are required

Floor Covering

New and used carpeting may be accepted if clean and in good condition, rolled up and measured

New and gently used Linoleum/Vinyl accepted. All material should be clean, rolled up, and marked with measurements.

Hardwood flooring must be in excellent condition and nail free

Ceramic tile and stone tile in a minimum of 5 unopened boxes if new and unused, clean with no cracks and unbroken

Some bricks - Clean, no dirt. Please call in advance

Plumbing Products

Faucets which are newer and meet federal standards may be accepted

Plumbing fixtures which are neat, clean, working and in usable condition may be accepted

White or Beige Toilets which are clean, no cracks, complete condition and in working condition (which include the tank top) may be accepted

 
Cabinets/Countertops

Cabinets accepted if they are in good condition, 15 years old or newer, with operable doors and drawers attached and clean and free of rot

Cabinets: No cabinet doors & cabinet drawers without entire cabinet

All cabinets must be free of rot and in good, usable condition

Counter-tops: Granite, Corian, Marble countertops accepted if clean and in straight pieces. Sorry, no Formica or laminate

Wood, lumber, trim & siding

Accept full and 1/2 sheets of plywood

Accept full lengths of lumber (8 ft)

Accept clean, full sheets of drywall - no partial sheets

Trim accepted in minimum 6' length

Must be free of rot, nails, and screws

Accept new, full boxes of siding only

Doors

All doors must be in good condition, free of rot, cracks and holes

Both exterior and interior doors which are new or gently used may be accepted

The ReStore will accept new, unused shower doors.

Vehicles

Habitat accepts donations of cars, trucks, boats and other vehicles

Monetary donations can be made through our secure online system HERE

 
Furniture

We do not accept upholstered furniture, mattresses or box springs.

Wooden furniture accepted: dressers with drawers/knobs, bed frames, end tables, coffee tables, dining room sets and chairs

Office furniture: desks, chairs, shelving

Electrical and Light Fixtures

All Electrical parts, lights, wiring and hardware are accepted.

All light fixtures must be in good, working condition, clean and rust-free.

Used fluorescent fixtures and bulbs cannot be accepted

Please call (847)249-3060 to discuss possible donation of any bulbs, new or used.

Hardware

Hardware for doors, cabinets, etc. may be accepted in good condition and rust-free

Please separate all hardware by type

Nails, screws, nuts or bolts must be in original packaging - only half boxes or fuller will be accepted (Please, no mixed boxes, coffee cans, Starbucks bags... :-)

Roofing Material

Shingles must be new and in complete packages

Metal roofing in full lengths only

Most roofing material donations are accepted

Please call ahead to make sure we are accepting roofing at the time of your donation

Broken and old appliances

Mattresses or upholstered furniture

Exercise equipment

Cordless Tools

Window blinds or curtains

Cast Iron Sinks

Fluorescent light fixtures or bulbs

Baby Items such as car seats, cribs or high chairs

Used Shower Doors

 

Have something we don't take?  Try one of these alternatives:

  • SWALCO takes solid waste like opened paint, opene cleanering products and electronics
  • Love.INC accepts gently-used beds, sofas and clothing.
  • Salvation Army welcomes clothing, sporting equipment, books and electronics. 
  • Freecycle your item.
  • Goodwill accepts a variety of clothing, household items

If you cannot find an organization to accept your donation, offer it free to others interested in keeping usable items out of landfills.
