Howard Peterson Nominated for WSPN Volunteer of the Year Award
He started off with a hobby of construction, but after getting involved with DuPage Habitat, he found a new passion in helping others.
In the past nine years, Howard Peterson has volunteered with DuPage Habitat’s construction team, at the ReStore in Addison, and on the Site Selection Committee. He says, “I initially started with DHFH because construction had been a hobby of mine and I felt I could put my skills to work helping others.”
Peterson is responsible for the beginning of DuPage Habitat’s Deconstruction Program, after unexpectedly finding an old college friend during his time volunteering. He’s always happy to lend a hand and felt particularly joyful during a Habitat Home Dedication. “One of my most rewarding experiences was handing over the keys to a new homeowner,” he says.
“As DuPage Habitat has expanded, I now volunteer at the ReStore – with the awesome deconstruction team, driving the truck for pickups, and at the store. I love telling people about the ReStore and its mission. People don’t realize they can donate entire kitchens! So I find myself asking people, ‘What’s in your kitchen?’”
It’s easy to get involved as a volunteer with DuPage Habitat for Humanity. You can attend a Volunteer Orientation to learn more, or directly search for opportunities on our volunteer platform. Help us build up our community and support future Habitat homeowners as they find strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.
Keep an eye out for National Volunteer Week, April 7-13, when we will highlight many of our volunteers and committees for their incredible work and dedication to the Habitat mission.
