Local Mother Partners with DuPage Habitat to Build a Home

DuPage Habitat for Humanity builds safety and stability through housing for a family of two.

On Friday, September 28, Anna and Ashley finally received the key to their new home. It was a simple act, but one with huge ramifications. They were finally receiving the gift of strength through shelter, after years of hard work.

Anna was born in Poland and moved to America when she was 18 years old. She is the proud mother of Ashley, her two-year-old daughter. Inspired by a friend who had been a DuPage Habitat Homeowner for 5 years, Anna saw how DuPage Habitat’s Homeownership Program had the power to create life-changing opportunities in someone’s life, especially for a single mom. She felt it was a miracle opportunity, and worked through 250 hours of sweat equity to achieve the ultimate goal for her family: Stability.

A large group gathered to hear DuPage Habitat’s Board President George Mulligan speak as the program began. There were also words from Jill Sobie, from DuPage Habitat Family Services and Father Greg Gorczyca from St. John Evangelist. Musicians Cathy and Mike Sanders played a hymn and Hilary McGrath, Family Services Committee Chair, embraced Anna before finally handing over the key to her new home.

“A Habitat home is a stabilizing force for a family. Better, affordable living conditions lead to improved health, stronger childhood development and the ability — and financial flexibility — to make forward-looking choices,” said Jill Sobie.

With key in hand and toddler on hip, Anna stepped forward to cut a large blue ribbon on their front door. Ashley’s eyes lit up as they entered the home together for the first time, and Anna pointed out where their new living room, kitchen, and backyard would be. The yard was full of healthy, bright flowers Anna had been taking care of for several months, a glimpse into her new life with a Habitat home.

Anna will be paying a mortgage for her new home through the DuPage Habitat Homeownership Program. To learn more about the Homeownership Program, visit: dupagehabitat.org.
