Habitat Hero Steve Ferrin

Steve The Painter

Steve Ferrin is known by many as Steve the Painter, he has over 50 years of painting experience. According to Steve, "I have had the opportunity to meet many volunteers, homeowners, and staff and I introduce myself as Steve the Painter.”

Steve has a marketing degree from Northern Illinois University (NIU). He also taught for 35 years and retired in 2008. After retirement, he decided to get involved with Habitat for Humanity, volunteering now for 13 years.

Steve first heard about Habitat while he was volunteering for Wesley United Methodist Church in Naperville, IL. He was interested in helping organizations in Aurora and Montgomery, for he knows more help was needed there. One of Steve’s favorite aspects about Habitat is its philosophy, he agrees that everyone deserves a decent place to live. Steve not only volunteers with Habitat, but invites others as well to be part of this organization. Steve is always posting pictures on his Facebook inviting others to donate money or sharing ways to volunteer.

Steve has been to over ten groundbreaking events for new homeowners. Steve said, "The groundbreaking event is the beginning of a future and a dream for those who can’t receive a conventional mortgage.”

Steve has been a volunteer member of the Fox Valley Habitat Builders Club. Steve indicated that the best part of being part of this group is the positive attitude of the team. It is amazing all the work that can be done when working together. Steve values all the effort from everyone who is willing to help, no matter how small, everything counts, for him faith is essential. Steve said, "I like the way I feel when helping people that I don't know, it makes me feel proud to give back to those less fortunate. It makes me happy to give others such joy.”

If there is something that Steve would like to change in the minds of the public, is the idea that Habitat for Humanity gives away homes. That’s why he continues to inform people around him about the mission and what they can do to help.

Whenever we ask Steve if he would like to help out, he is one of the first volunteers to show up and continue to come every day until the job is done. Steve is very sincere and has a giving heart for our mission and the families we serve. We are so blessed to have him as one of our Habitat Heroes.
