Habitat Hero- In Memory of: John Mixen
John Mixen is a role model to volunteers at Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity. He was a carpenter by trade who gave back to those less fortunate as much as he could. We are extremely grateful to have worked alongside John on the Faith Build Homes.
John grew up in Dwight, Illinois and was the youngest of seven children. He attended and graduated from Dwight High School. He followed his interests and was a carpenter for over 35 years.
He met his beloved wife, Anne, in 1983, when she was in college working as a lifeguard. Through a mutual friend, he met Anne and proceeded to ask her out on a date. They got married in 1987 and had two children, Laura and John.
John and Anne were members of Grace United Methodist Church in Naperville for almost 30 years. The church often went on mission trips around the southeastern part of the country helping to rebuild hurricane or tornado damaged areas meeting up with other Habitat for Humanity affiliates. John participated in more than 40 mission trips alongside his family over the years.
John learned about Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity at the church and began to volunteer in 2016. He participated in the Faith Build Program putting his years of carpentry experience into good use. John loved seeing the adults and youth working and learning together and the community loved him back. He was easy-going and patient with the people working alongside him. John not only shared his carpentry skills at Habitat job sites, but helped in other areas as well, including operating the machinery needed to lift trusses to the roof, and constructing walls. He was very dedicated and always ready to pitch in to help when needed. His professional workmanship was some of the finest we have ever experienced at Habitat. He was an awesome site to watch when he was putting a house together!
Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity is eternally grateful for having a volunteer such as John Mixen. Unfortunately, John passed away in April 2021, he will be greatly missed. We will never forget how kind and loving you were to all those met you. We are honored to have John Mixen as a Habitat Hero!
