Chicagoland Habitat for Humanity Announces New 2021-2022 Board Members
Eight leaders from across the region bring expertise and impact to Habitat’s mission
CHICAGO (April 26, 2022) - In celebration of National Volunteer Month, Chicagoland Habitat for Humanity is pleased to announce the election of eight new board members in the last year.
As a support organization to eight regional Habitat affiliates, Chicagoland Habitat strategically recruits and harnesses the skills and strengths of board members who have subject matter expertise to further our core mission helping Habitat for Humanity affiliates to serve more families through home ownership and home repair.
“These leaders bring a wealth of expertise to our Board of Directors,” said Sarah Brachle Wagner, CEO of Chicagoland Habitat. “ From retail to real estate, marketing to mortgages, construction to technology, we are excited to grow the breadth and diversity of our board to advance Habitat’s impact.”
J. Kelly Bufton is a Senior Counsel in the Real Estate Practice Group in the Chicago office of Haynes and Boone. He has represented clients on both sides of every kind of transaction in the real estate industry, including landlords and tenants, sellers and buyers, lenders and borrowers, and developers and investors.
Kelly’s practice focuses on all types of real estate transactions, including development projects, finance transactions (on behalf of lenders and borrowers), acquisitions and dispositions, joint venture agreements, and leases, among other matters.
Kelly has long been an advocate of Habitat for Humanity, providing them with pro bono counsel on acquisitions and leases and previously serving as the board president for DuPage Habitat for Humanity.
Melissa Dorko is a Managing Director at Deloitte Consulting LLP. is a Managing Director at Deloitte Consulting LLP in the commercial organization driving marketing transformation. Prior to Deloitte, Melissa was a Chief Growth Officer at Wunderman Thompson (A WPP Company) where she was responsible for overseeing all revenue performance, strategy, and alignment of the organization’s growth, marketing, and public relation’s teams within the North American region for the agency.
With more than 20 years of experience driving growth for companies, Melissa has used her breadth of expertise in digital transformation to led business development and marketing teams to uncover opportunities for a wide array of businesses ranging from Fortune 500 companies to innovative start-ups. As a consumer experience and digital business development leader, Melissa’s expertise encompasses branding, strategy, creative, store design, eCommerce and digital marketing initiatives for B2B and B2C brands.
Melissa believes deeply in the mission of Habitat for Humanity. Providing affordable housing to the families and neighborhoods that need it most provides stability and independence for families to build better lives and stronger communities.
James Harris, CMB®, AMP is a Senior Vice President at Wintrust Mortgage and is a twenty-nine year residential mortgage banking professional. He was born and raised on the Southside of Chicago and currently resides in a south suburban community of the Chicagoland area (Orland Park). James is married and has three daughters, (Kyanna, Brooklyn & Kennedy). He is also a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.
James’ career began as a Realtor, in the early 1990’s. He always had aspirations of entering into the mortgage banking industry, but thought that he would be more successful if he could gain a working knowledge of real estate sales first. When the opportunity presented itself, James made the transition to residential mortgage banking for Norwest Mortgage (now known as Wells Fargo). He spent 15 years at Norwest/Wells and worked his way up from loan originator to sales manager, to branch manager, to area manager and finally as a regional manager.
James was presented an opportunity to head the Affordable Lending Division for Wintrust Mortgage and he accepted that opportunity. He has been with Wintrust Mortgage for nearly ten years and has grown the Affordable Lending Division significantly. James is a graduate of the Mortgage Bankers Association’s “School of Mortgage Banking”, where he earned the designation of Accredited Mortgage Profession (AMP) and he recently earned the highest designation, Certified Mortgage Banker (CMB), in residential mortgage banking.
In his spare time, James likes to travel, read and enjoy time with family and friends.
Chris Kempa serves as Chief Executive Officer of True Value Company. He joined the Company in November, 2019 and previously served as Chief Commercial Officer, where he rapidly implemented and executed an integrated merchandising, sales and pricing go-to-market strategy.
Chris has a long track record of successfully leading businesses in the retail channel and has over 25 years of experience in the product distribution sector. He comes to True Value from ORS Medco, where he most recently served as chief executive officer and group president. Prior to that he was an officer at Grainger with responsibility for its international business.
Chris holds an MBA from Lake Forest Graduate School of Management, as well as a master’s certificate in project management from George Washington University.
Kim King is Senior Director of Global Sourcing and Procurement for Elkay Manufacturing Company located in Downers Grove, IL. She is responsible for the sourcing and procurement function, including building and maintaining supplier relationships, risk mitigation, cost savings, and overall procurement and sourcing strategy for Elkay’s Plumbing division. Kim has also led the DEI Council for Elkay for the past two years.
Kim brings over 20 years of supply chain experience between Elkay and Sears. She has an undergraduate BBA-Finance degree from University of Michigan, and an MBA from University of Chicago.
Kim is an Advisory Board member for Governors State University’s Supply Chain Innovation Center and Business Incubator, whose mission is to is to promote innovation and contribute to the economic and workforce development of Chicago’s southland region. She holds a Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) certification from ISM organization and is an active member in ISM and APICS supply chain organizations.
Ashlee Pforr is a Project Executive at Skender, one of Chicago’s largest building contractors with full-service construction capabilities in office, healthcare, multifamily, interiors and more. As project executive, she leads multiple teams of managers and engineers providing overall construction project management direction. Since joining Skender in 2010, Ashlee has overseen numerous construction teams on significant projects, including HERE Technologies, Cars.com, SRAM, Echo Global Logistics and Bank of America at 110 N. Wacker.
Ashlee is recognized for her mentorship and talent development, and she was twice named one of Crain’s Chicago Business’ Notable Women in Construction and Design. As a public speaker and published writer, Ashlee frequently shares her knowledge on important industry topics and trends. She earned a degree in Civil Engineering from Iowa State University and served on the Habitat for Humanity Women Build committee prior to this new board position.
Anthony Scattone is the Deputy Chief People Officer at Aon. In this role, he is responsible for the core capabilities within the People Organization including the compensation, benefits, talent acquisition, learning, M&A and the wellbeing Centers of Excellence. Since joining the firm in early 2019, Anthony has led some of the most complex and critical colleague related initiatives in the firm’s history. Key initiatives include evolving the salary and incentive allocation and distribution approaches, redesigning incentive plans to support I&D progress, conducting due diligence and negotiation on large-scale, simultaneous acquisitions and divestitures, implementing a large-scale transaction-related retention program, addressing the wellbeing, cost management and mobility challenges of the COVID pandemic, and most recently developing the Aon United Growth Ownership Plan.
Anthony joined Aon from United Airlines where he served as the Vice President, Total Rewards. In this capacity, he developed and executed a rewards strategy in support of a strategic turnaround, including redesign of the performance management approach and incentive plan design, implementation of a leading-edge recognition platform, and optimization of benefits to manage costs, harmonize designs and maximize wellbeing for 90,000 employees globally. Over his tenure at United, Anthony’s portfolio also included talent development, employee experience, and the employee pass travel program.
Prior to United Airlines, Anthony was with Willis Towers Watson. There he served for 7 years as the leader of the Houston retirement business and 3 years as its revenue generation leader. Prior to joining Willis Towers Watson, Anthony was a principal at Mercer.
Anthony has a Bachelor of Arts in Physics from Cornell University and attained his Fellowship in the Society of Actuaries in 2003.
Sanjay Sood is Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for CDW. He is responsible for establishing the company’s future technology vision and strategic direction, while building and implementing platforms to support customers, coworkers and partners.
Sanjay joined CDW in 2020 and brings over 15 years of experience in driving innovative change within complex technology environments. He previously worked at HERE Technologies for over five years, where he most recently served as vice president/general manager of highly automated driving (HAD) with full accountability for the strategy, execution and rollout for a new global product line of high definition maps to support self-driving vehicles, including both software and hardware development. He joined HERE Technologies as vice president of core map engineering in 2014 where he led a global engineering team powering a $1B+ location content business. Prior to working at HERE Technologies, Sanjay held senior positions at YP (formerly AT&T Interactive), leading product development for the consumer vertical which supported over 70M visitors per month across mobile and desktop. Earlier in his career, he worked on core algorithms for contextual search applications at Northwestern University's Intelligent Information Laboratory, out of which numerous technology startups were launched. Sanjay holds over a dozen patents for his work in machine learning, information retrieval and digital mapping.
Sanjay earned both a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in computer science from Northwestern University.
